How sad.
McCarthyism lives!. It worked then and it works now.
Statement from Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks
March 14, 2003
“As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers’ lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American.”
Yeah she apologized not out of any respect or sincerity, but rather fear from the “MAJORITY,” (read that word once again Lisa) of this great country who buy their records, cds, etc.. and who disagree with what she said. I’m not arguing she that doesn’t have the right to speak out, she does. But then so does the majority against her.
How about trying to explain that?
Daniel,
I am not saying she, or anyone else for that matter, cannot make anti-war statements, in fact you are 110% right that it is her American right to free speech, no object!
BUT if people disagree with her then it is within their rights to not buy her music. She is not being censored, since censoring would not let her speak at all, but rather sending a measure of protest. Those that oppose her are exercising their rights to free speech, which are the same ones you are advocating that she deserves.
Also to set you straight you are wrong with your assumption about the war, since the President DID seek and receive congressional approval for it. Do your facts first, before espousing that it is a war of agression or illegal.
